about the work
A physical-theater work for 10 dancers, MONGER tells the story of a group of servants, trapped in the basement of the house of an abusive mistress. Marshall's movement is physical, sharp, fast, contains ethnic-contemporary motifs and is known for being highly emotive, visual and theatrical. The score for MONGER combines elements of Gypsy, Balkan with classical and rock music.

MONGER explores the dynamics of hierarchy, power, free will and the compromises one makes in order to survive. The piece's narrative structure is drawn from several sources including the life and work of Bruno Shultz, Jean Genet's play "The Maids" and Robert Altman's film "Gosford Park".

MONGER was premiered October 25 2008 at the Suzanne Dellal Centre and opened the 2008 International Tel Aviv Dance Festival.

This production was also made possible by the generous support of Sandy Caroll (USA), Jean and Jerry Friedman (USA), Maureen and Randy Rosen (USA), the Margalit Oved Dance Theatre Foundation (USA), and Mel Marshall(USA).

PRESS

"Barak Marshall proves that he is a true auteur, a fully-fledged choreographer, with a powerful style and a unique voice. His work is muscular, original, fevered, carried by excellent dancers, and by an internal force and an intelligence that infuse it with eloquence that is at times arresting."
Raphael de Gubernatis,
Le Nouvel Observateur, February 2, 2009

"This tongue-in-cheek wild dance is a beauty, bursting with energy and human passions. It employs a unique vocabulary that synergizes ethnic spirit with contemporary perceptions of the body."
